Kendall Jackson Winery Going Green

Kendall Jackson wine is always a safe bet when dining out without breaking the bank. They make great house pours. Who drinks wine and not know this winery?

Today, I stumbled upon an article on their site. Guess what!? They care about the environment! After reading the Kendall Jackson's blog post from January 27, 2011, they won my support! Next time I buy a bottle of wine, I may choose Kendall Jackson over JLohr for my table wine.

Kendall Jackson has a energy conservation program.  Recently, they've installed over 4,000 fluorescent fixtures custom made by General Electric. Surely, this saves KJ 155,000kWh per year from standard gear and associated Green House Gases (GHG). However, these fixtures has a permenant shealth that protects people from below if the fluorescent bulbs ever breaks. What does that mean? The mercury from these fluorescent fixtures would end up in landfills. Thank goodness that Kendall Jackson is looking out for future generations and eventually was able to have GE custom manufacture KJ's bulbs to fit the environmental specs.

Even beyond the warehouses and indoor lighting, Kendall Jackson raises the bar on outdoor lighting. KJ followed the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) protocols for reducing light emissions. This surely is another energy saving (25,000 kWh) and Green House Gas reduction by using reflectors to reduce bulb wattage.

Wine enthusiasts may have their own wine cellars. How do you light them? In the same rectrospect, should we not retrofit to a greener specification? How about replacing those T5 microfluorescent fixtures with T5 LED fixtures? There's no UV and much less heat while saving energy with T5 LED light fixtures.

OK, maybe you're like me. I'm renting so I own a wine fridge. That darn wine fridge doesn't have a light though to showcase my wine collection. Here's a solution: Mini LED stick. Same idea as the LED T5 but much smaller. These mini LED sticks has a 3M adhesive on the backside so you can stick virtually anywhere that is nonporous. LED sticks comes in two sizes of 8 or 12 inches which is perfect for any size wine fridge. Both mini LED sticks and T5 LED fixtures are linkable so there is no need to worry about dark spaces.

Be sure to visit Savio Lighting's Boston lighting showroom or online at saviolighting.com when you're outfitting your wine showcase.
